Terms of Service.

Effective June 1, 2026. These terms are written in plain language because we believe you should understand what you're agreeing to.

Here's the deal in one paragraph

You pay a one-time setup fee and a monthly subscription. There's no contract — you can cancel anytime. You own your maps. We host them, ship you NFC stickers, and give you an admin panel to manage everything. We don't collect personal data from your guests. If you cancel, we give you 30 days to transition out cleanly.

1. What we do

TapTheMap is an NFC-based wayfinding service for venues. When you sign up, here's what you get: we program NFC stickers with your venue's unique map URL and ship them to you. We host your venue map on our servers so it loads fast on guests' phones. We give you access to an admin panel where you can upload new maps anytime. We also offer aggregate analytics through Plausible as an optional add-on — so you can see how many times your map gets viewed, without tracking individual guests.

TapTheMap is operated by Technology Assessment Project LLC ("TAP"), an Illinois limited liability company founded by Matt Overeem.

2. What it costs

There are two charges: a one-time setup fee (paid before we begin work) and a monthly subscription fee (billed on the first of each month). Current pricing is published on our Pricing page. That's it — no hidden fees, no per-tap charges, no overage billing.

We accept payment by credit card, ACH transfer, check, or purchase order. Standard payment terms are Net 30 from invoice date. If your organization requires different terms — Net 45, Net 60, or a specific invoicing format — we're happy to work with your procurement process.

If we ever need to change our pricing, we'll give you 60 days' written notice. Any change applies only to future billing periods — we won't retroactively charge you more for months you've already paid. Subscription prices will not increase by more than 10% in any 12-month period.

For budgeting purposes: the one-time setup fee can be categorized as a capital expenditure (CapEx). Monthly subscription fees are operating expenses (OpEx). If you need this distinction documented on your invoice, just ask.

3. No contracts

There is no minimum commitment. No annual lock-in. No cancellation penalty. You can cancel your subscription at any time by emailing mattovereem@tapthemap.online. Your cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period — you won't be charged again after that. Setup fees are non-refundable once deployment work has begun.

4. What happens when you cancel

If you cancel your subscription, we'll work with you on a 30-day transition period. During that window, your map remains live and functional so you have time to remove or cover the NFC stickers at your venue at your own pace.

After the transition period ends, sticker taps will redirect to a neutral landing page explaining that the map is no longer available. Your stickers will never redirect to a competitor, never serve an advertisement, and never display any content you haven't approved. We won't use your venue's URL for anything else.

You retain full ownership of any map files you provided to us. If you want your analytics history exported before we close the account, just ask and we'll send it over.

5. Seasonal venues

If your venue operates seasonally, you don't have to cancel and re-sign-up every year. We offer a seasonal hold with an ongoing monthly site maintenance fee. This keeps your map URL active and your NFC stickers working year-round — so a sticker mounted permanently at your entrance doesn't break just because it's January.

Before each season, we'll work with you to make sure everything is ready: verifying sticker condition, updating your map if the venue layout has changed, and confirming analytics are active for opening day. Contact us to set up a schedule that matches your venue's calendar.

6. Your maps belong to you

Any map files, branding, or content you give us remain your property. We don't claim ownership, we don't license them to anyone else, and we don't use them for anything other than delivering your wayfinding service. If you cancel, your files are yours to take.

The TapTheMap platform itself — the admin panel, the hosting infrastructure, the NFC programming methods — that's ours. But your content is always yours.

7. We don't track your guests

When a guest taps a sticker and views your map, we don't know who they are. We don't set cookies. We don't ask them to log in. We don't track their location. We don't use third-party advertising scripts. The only analytics we collect are aggregate page views through Plausible — how many times the map was viewed, which days were busiest — with no ability to identify any individual.

Our full Privacy Policy explains this in detail, including every third-party service we use and exactly what data they do and don't collect.

8. Uptime

We target 99.9% uptime. Your map is served as a static asset, which means it loads fast and stays available even during brief maintenance windows thanks to browser caching. If we need to do scheduled maintenance that might affect availability, we'll tell you in advance when possible. We can't be responsible for outages caused by things outside our control — internet providers going down, cellular carriers having issues, or a guest's phone not working.

9. The stickers

Every sticker we ship is pre-programmed with your venue's URL and write-locked so nobody can reprogram it. We provide guidance on where and how to mount them, but the physical installation is on you and your team.

If a sticker gets damaged, lost, or vandalized, we'll ship you a replacement at no charge. If you need more stickers than your plan includes, additional tags are available at a discount with quantity.

10. Liability

If something goes wrong on our end, our total liability is limited to the amount you've paid us in the twelve months before the issue. We aren't liable for indirect or consequential damages — the kind of downstream costs that neither of us can predict or control. This is standard for service agreements and is meant to keep things fair for both sides.

11. Business continuity

TapTheMap's hosting runs on automated infrastructure that operates without manual intervention. Maps are served as static files from a dedicated VPS with automated process management (PM2), automated SSL certificate renewal, and automated daily backups. The system is designed to run unattended — your map stays live and functional even during periods of unavailability.

For venues requiring formal business continuity provisions, we can discuss DNS escrow and map file export arrangements to ensure your wayfinding service remains available regardless of circumstances.

12. If we change these terms

We may update these terms from time to time. If we do, we'll give you 30 days' notice. For anything material — a significant change to pricing, cancellation, or data handling — we'll email you directly. If you keep using the service after the changes take effect, that counts as acceptance. If you don't agree with a change, you can cancel per the terms above.

13. The legal fine print

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Illinois. If we ever end up in a dispute that we can't resolve between us, it would be handled in the courts of Cook County, Illinois.

14. Questions?

If anything here is unclear, ask. Matt Overeem is available at mattovereem@tapthemap.online or (224) 217-7494. There's no legal team between you and a straight answer.

A note about this document

These terms are written in plain language on purpose. They haven't been reviewed by an attorney yet. If your organization has a procurement process that requires a formal master services agreement or vendor contract, let us know — we're happy to work with your team on something that fits your requirements.
